99% of additional power
Energyst were asked to provide power for the TV broadcast area, TV trucks, commentary positions, the sponsor village, the press centre, food gardens... basically anything that was not connected to the city grid. Energyst also laid on emergency backup power for the stadium lighting and took care of the opening ceremony. All in all, about 99% of additional power came from Energyst."
No second chances
There are no second chances during events like this, with live TV broadcasting throughout the entire world. Given all the different time zones involved, broadcasting takes place more or less round-the-clock, so power has to be supplied 24/7. The main supply came from an 1800 kVA and two 1500 kVA synchronised generating sets, each supporting the others. If one generator failed, they would be no interruption to the supply. Even people working on computers wouldn't lose any data. Installation took approximately three weeks. There were four people from Energyst on-site, plus a crew of about 10 local technicians to pull cable. An Energyst project manager had overall responsibility for all aspects including transportation, paperwork, finance and legal matters, while an on site Energyst technician oversaw the day-to-day running.
Pan-European
18 truckloads of equipment arrived from Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK; a truly pan-European logistics exercise. Energyst also received a great deal of help from Witraktor, the local Caterpillar dealer and the local crew did a superb job pulling cable. People don't just get Energyst, they also get the backup of the Caterpillar organisation, for spare parts, oil, technical help... you name it.
Job well done
Despite the magnitude of the task, plus the fact that power had to be on tap a week before the competition started so for instance TV trucks and broadcasters could start operating as soon as they arrived, everything went smoothly. The event organisers were very grateful that the Energyst team had managed to pull it off, and thanked us for a job well done.
