THE VARG A PROJECT

Energyst Oil & Gas Depot Egersund, Norway

At the beginning of September 2008 we were approached by two companies regarding the rental of an O&G unit for a small platform in the North Sea called Varg A. The generator was to run the Fire Pump onboard for any emergency situations, so it is basically a standby unit. We offered a budget rate for renting one of our new Oil & Gas units.

After several discussions and clarifications Teekay Norway took over the project at the beginning of 2009, and the ball really started rolling. We not only had to place our Oil & Gas unit on the platform, it also needed some modifications. Together with our Technical Manager, Kjell Olsen Øen, Teekay decided that they needed some very special arrangements onboard the platform. This meant that we had to rebuild certain parts of the unit, and also install an extra long piping construction for the air intake and also for removal of the exhaust gases. See pictures. The container also needed overpressure, because of the danger of gas.

In cooperation with the local companies Geksys and Trade Tech, we managed to find a solution that was accepted by Teekay.

At the very end of May 2009, Teekay gave us the order for renting a unit plus the rebuild, which we were responsible for. At the beginning of July 2009 the unit was ready for an acceptance test. Our Technicians built up the whole new piping to the unit in our yard, and together with a representative for Teekay and DNV, the rebuilt unit was fully tested (incl. overpressure).

It all ended successfully, and during July the unit and all the extra equipment was shipped offshore. In early August 2009, our Technician Trond Hadland, together with people from Teekay, installed and tested the unit offshore.

The rental agreement is from now until the summer of 2010 with the possibility of extension. When the unit is off hired, Teekay will support us for putting the unit back to its normal condition, and we will store the additional equipment for them for later use when required. We also periodically send a Service Technician offshore to check the unit.
